Cutting Long Hair

March 14th, 2008

If you’ve had long hair for more than a week or two, you’ve probably met one of those rude people that insists upon telling you that you should cut your hair everytime they see you.

Don’t do it!

I’ve never cut my hair because someone else wanted me to, but I did cut about a foot of hair off three weeks ago because I had split ends, and I was tired of getting it caught in the car door.

Guess who noticed!

Nobody. (I did have my husband help determine if I’d cut it straight, so he didn’t have a chance not to notice.)

Even the people who wented to cut my hair, or thought my hair was too long didn’t notice.

I don’t mind that they didn’t notice, but I’m definitely glad that I didn’t cut it to make anyone else happy.

I’d have been really disappointed then.

How funny! I always love watching those TLC shows where they cut someone’s very long hair and see the transformation.

No one noticed?! That is too bad, I would love to see a picture of your new cut.

Thanks Jen, I’ll try to get one up.

It isn’t that much of a difference - pretty much from mid-thigh to the top of the bottom but with as much as people like to comment about it, I thought someone would say something.

Just goes to show you need to do what you like best. You are the only one that has to walk around looking like you.

  4. Sarah

    I absolutely agree Sara.

So - today after a month someone finally noticed that I cut my hair :-)

I’m glad I didn’t cut it to make anyone happy - or to make anyone shut up and quit asking me when I was going to cut it.

When my hair was down to my waist people would say that stuff to me all the time! People are so rude sometimes. I would never tell someone what to do with thier hair. My hair is shorter now because I wanted it that way, but sometimes I think people say that stuff just because they want to make you feel bad or something!

  13. Sarah

Lydia, I know what you mean! Fortunately I’ve only had a few strangers approach me and tell me that I should cut my hair and donate it to Locks of Love, but I’ve been involved with several conversations with people I know about that kind of stuff.

I don’t see why people feel the need to tell me that I need to cut my hair just because they don’t like it - they aren’t the ones that have to live with it.

I am in this predictment now. I have rather long hair and I want to cut but I want to leave only about 2 inches of hair. I really dislike rude people, who want to tell u what to do with ur person..

    Thanks for stopping by..

  15. Sarah

    Seymone, you’re welcome!

I bet you’d look great with short hair.

My hair is waist-length and I, too, have had a number of people tell me to cut it. I know chopping long hair can make an instant transformation that is fun to see, but the hair styles they are encouraging are actually much higher maintenance than my long hair. Plus, if I frequently told someone how she needed to change her hair, or something else about her appearance, I would probably be considered rude and pushy! Someone in college actually started to fill out a form for me to donate to Locks of Love before I convinced him to stop. How would someone like it if I commented on the size of her wardrobe and gave her a spiel about Dress for Success or Goodwill? I really don’t care for people making me feel selfish or feel like I am less than attractive for not following trends. (And actually part of the reason my hair got to be waist-length is that I used to be called a hippie in jr. high and so I decided I wouldn’t cut it to make anyone happy and it grew several inches longer. How’s that for teenage rebellion?)

    April, welcome!

I absolutely agree that most shorter hairstyles require much more maintenance than long hair.

I can wash it, let it air dry, and go.

If it was shorter I’d have to get it cut more frequently, spend time styling it every day, make sure it didn’t get flat - because I have really thin hair.

I also don’t know why people think it’s ok to be rude just because we have long hair.

I’m sure they just don’t think, but that’s not an excuse.

I do have to say that I’ve never had a stranger walk up to me and tell me that I should donate my hair to locks of love until I moved to Minnesota.

Maybe it’s something in the air.

LOL at growing your hair out to rebel :-)

A supervisor I once had told me I should cut my waist-length hair, for aestheic reasons, not safety-at-work reasons (I worked in an office and wore my hair in a brai or a bun). I did cut it, to shoulder-length, because I let his comments make me question myself, and I hated it! Since then, I’ve had extemely short hair, waist-length hair (again), and now it’s to the middle of my back. And it’s mine, all mine! (I left the job, mostly because he was horrible to work for.)

  19. Sarah

Silverin I’m sorry your supervisor convinced you to cut your hair. It is hard when you have to worry about your hair or your job, but sometimes that’s what it comes down too.

I always thought it was strange when people said long hair was bad for work when I was in healthcare.

I could braid my hair, put it in a bun, or even put it in a ponytail and it would stay behind my back, without flopping around to the front at innopportune moments or getting in my eyes - the patients had less to worry about with my hair than they did with some of the women with shorter hair.
