The joys of white teeth

October 3rd, 2007

As we speak I’m sitting here with the most disgusting taste in my mouth.

I finally gave in and decided to try a sample of Listerene Whitening Quick Dissolving Strips.

Although the commercials - and the website show people whitening their teeth who claim you can’t see anything, my teeth don’t look normal with the strips on.

There are bubbles around the edges of some teeth, and the rest of the teeth look like they have a coat of something on them.

Although it might not be noticeable from far away, it’s definitely not something I’d wear out in public - and I’d even be a little nervous if the doorbell rang now and I had to answer the door.

My only previous experience with whitening strips is with crest whitening strips, and I have to say I prefer them.

When I opened the listerine whitening strips by tearing off the strip on the top of the pouch, I tore off the top of the whitening strip as well.

The strip was still useable, but I’m generally not impressed with products that tear when I open the package.

I tried to be a little more careful with the second strip, and I ended up not tearing the strip off completely, so I had to play with the package a little to get the strip out.

I also had trouble finding the strip in the first package since the top was torn.

When I first applied the strip I was amazed at the awful taste! After applying both strips I realized that if I relaxed my teeth would stick together because of the strips, so I’m trying to hold them apart to avoid the unpleasant feeling.

It’s been 10 minutes since I applied the strips, and they still haven’t dissolved.

I’m also still experiencing an “increase in salivary flow” as they so pleasantly term it on their website.

I’m also feeling a chunky collection of gel on the back of my front teeth.

And when I swallow - the taste is pretty gross as well.

I definitely would not wear these at work, or in public unless I was in a place where spittoon use was acceptable.

One of the reasons I waited so long to try the strips was because the sample package didn’t have any material about when to apply them - should I wait after eating, or brushing my teeth?

If so how long?

I was able to find out that I should wait to eat until the strips are dissolved by visiting the FAQ section of their web site, but I never would have visited the web site if I wasn’t posting this blog.

I’m really glad that I only got a sample instead of purchasing a package of these strips.

I definitely won’t be using them again, unless I notice some very dramatic whitening after this one time only use.

[…] noticeably whiten my teeth, so due to all of the problems I had (you can read about it at The Joys of White Teeth) I won’t be using it […]

Thanks for the info. I had mine whitened at a dentist’s office when he assured me I had great enamel. Couldn’t notice any difference in my teeth only in my wallet - $400 down the drain. They really portray it differently on commercials (duh) but also on personal beauty improvement shows on TV. Beware people, everything is not as rosy as it seems, even in a dentist’s office when you think you’re dealing with a professional.

Max, I can’t believe that you didn’t notice any difference in your teeth, that’s terrible.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, hopefully it will help someone.

I can’t believe people are willing to charge so much money for something that’s so inneffective - and they have to know that it’s not going to work.

I’m trying them now. They are terrible! They get stuck to my fingers when I’m trying to put them on, and the white strips end up forming together anyway. I don’t even see HOW they could whiten.

Hi Nicole, I’m sorry that you’re having so much trouble.

They are so difficult to apply, I don’t see how they could whiten if you can’t get them on properly either.
